Materials: Karuta prints; cut Station-to-Station prints; small papers #2-12 (with cellophane tape)



Greeting- 2 minutes
Teacher to Students- Listen & Repeat (some or all)
Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Pair Karuta- 10 minutes
Materials- print of foods for each pair of students.
Blackboard-

  • What would you like, rice or bread?
  • Rice, please.
Students- Play in seat pairs. Listen to the teachers’ conversation, and be the first to touch the food on the print.  Each student circles their answer with a different colored pen or pencil.
ALT/HRT- Ask each other paired foods from the lesson- ‘Rice or bread?’, and answer.

Chant- What would you like? Version II- 5 minutes
EigoNoto- pages 77 or 79, or pair food flashcards, if available.
Blackboard-
  • What clap 2X What would you like? clap-clap
  • Juice or Milk? clap-clap 2X  Juice, please. clap-clap-clap
ALT/HRT- Lead chanting and singing.
Students- Chant/sing along. Choose a food from the food pairs.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students: First, students each choose 2 foods. Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4.
Blackboard:     
  • W) Rice or bread?.
  • L) Rice, please.

Maru Batsu Game- 10 minutes
Materials- 2 dice; foods flashcards, if available.
EigoNoto- pages 56-7, or card page 77 or 79.
Blackboard-
  • Pizza or sushi
  • Pizza, please!
ALT/HRT- Choose aloud 2 foods from the border of pages 56-7, or with food flashcards. Choose a student with dice. All students Listen and Repeat, ‘Pizza or sushi?’. All students think about the dice-chosen student’s answer, and raise hands for food A, or don’t raise hands for food B. Listen and Repeat again, then chosen student answers.
Students- Repeat after ALT. Choose what you think the dice-chosen student will answer- think about the dice-chosen student’s answer, and raise hands for a food A answer, or don’t raise hands for a food B answer. Students guessing correctly (and the dice-chosen student) score 2 points.

Activity- Station to Station- 10 minutes
Materials- cut print of numbered, paired foods for each student. Small
numbered papers (2-12) posted in order on the walls around the room.
Blackboard-
  • W) Rice or bread?
  • L) Bread, please!
Students- READY- All students circle ONE food for each of the numbered food pairs on their print. TO PLAY-Seat pairs play Janken, and the winner uses the food pairs at #1 to ask, ‘Rice or bread?’ Then the WINNER moves to the next station; the loser stays at the same station, forms another pair, and plays Janken again. The winner forms a new pair at the new station, and continues play. The first student to get to the last station is the winner.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Closing- 1 minute
Students: ‘Thank you! Good bye!’
Teachers: ‘You’re welcome! Good bye!’
