Materials: CD & player; Text; ABC pair Karuta print; Phonics cards



Greeting- 2 minutes
Teacher to Students- Listen & Repeat (some or all)
Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students: Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4
Blackboard:   

  • W) あいさつ
  • L) Listen & Repeat

Song- ABCs, slowly- 2 minutes
Blackboard- A B C D... X Y Z
ALT- Lead in singing the song, point to the letters on the blackboard.
British style,  h-i-j-k-l-m-n  o-p-q-r-s-t-u... At end- ‘Happy, happy, I’m happy! I can sing my ABCs!’

Song- ABCs, with CD- 3 minutes
CD- track #3
HRT/ALT/Students- Sing along.

Activity 1- Find the Letters in the Picture- 10 minutes
EigoNoto- page 4
Blackboard- large ABCs
HRT/ALT- Point to a letter on the blackboard. Ask students, “What’s this? Where is the letter in the picture?” Encourage students to find the letters in the picture.
Students- Find the letters in the picture in the workbook.

Pair Karuta- 13 minutes
Materials- print with LARGE letters
Blackboard- large ABCs
Students- In seat pairs, play Karuta. Each student uses a different color pen to circle the letters they ‘get’.
ALT/HRT- Call out one letter at a time for students. Cross the letter off the blackboard, and mark it with a magnet for students to see, after you call it.

Phonics- if time
Materials- Phonics flashcards
ALT- Explain that in Japanese, the hiragana & katakana names and sounds are the same. But in English, the are NOT the same. Point to the ABCs on the blackboard and say the letter sounds for the students to repeat (or alternatively, use the Phonics Review Set of flashcards to match each letter sound to a word).

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Closing- 1 minute
Students: ‘Thank you! Good bye!’
Teachers: ‘You’re welcome! Good bye!’
