Greeting- 2 minutes
Teacher to Students- Listen & Repeat (some or all)
Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students: Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4
Blackboard

  • W) (say student number in Japanese) 'Jyu-nana.'
  • L) (say the number in English) 'Seventeen.'

Song/Chant- 5 minutes
Textbook- bottom of page 17
CD- track #15, or separate audio.
Slow CD- track #20
ALT/HRT- Listen & Repeat months’ names once before singing; then lead the singing.
Students- Listen & Repeat, and point to, the months’ names; then sing along.

Eraser/Keyword Game- 10 minutes (hear an audio example)
Blackboard-
  • When is Christmas?  
  • It’s in December. 
  • -January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December-
ALT/HRT- First show the students, and Listen & Repeat, the ‘keyword’ (ex.: December). Then in turns ask and answer the question, sometimes using a different month than the keyword (ex.: When is Christmas? It’s NOT in March). Cross off the month’s name on the blackboard.
1-New Years Day; 2- Setsubun; 3- Hina Matsuri; 4-nyugakkushiki; 5-Kodomo no Hi; 6-Geishi; 7-Umi no Hi; 8-Obon/Summer; 9-Otsukimi/Keiro no Hi; 10-your birthday!; 11-Shichi-go-san (7-5-3); 12-Christmas.
Students- In pairs, face each other over a desk; put an eraser in the center of the desk. Listen & Repeat the ‘keyword’. Then when/if the keyword is said, try to be the first to take the eraser.

Birthmonth Pronunciation Practice- 3 minutes
ALT/HRT- Ask students born in January (then February, March, etc.) to stand. Say the month name for them to repeat.
Students- Stand for your birthmonth.  Listen & Repeat, then sit down.

Chant #2/Activity- When is your birthday?- 10 minutes
Materials: 2 dice
Blackboard:
  • When is your birthday? X3 
  • My birthday is in....
  • January, February, .... December.
ALT: Lead the chant. Each time at the end, roll the dice to choose a month’s name (any repeat = 1 = January).
Students: All stand and chant along. If your birth month’s name is chosen, you can sit down.

Activity 2-Interview- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W)When is your birthday?
  • L)My birthday is in OO.
Textbook- page 21
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate the activity- Play Janken, Winner asks When is your birthday?, Loser answers. Winner writes friend’s name into the space for that month in the textbook. Make new pairs. Next do the activity with a few students to model and check accuracy.
Students-Do activity as described above/demonstrated by teachers.

Wrap-Up- 2 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Closing- 1 minute
Students: ‘Thank you! Good bye!’
Teachers: ‘You’re welcome! Good bye!’
